Fairfield Medical Centre Services

Health Checks

At Fairfield Medical Centre we provide health checks for a range of purposes. These include corporate health checks, health checks for insurance or retirement home purposes and general health checkups to ensure that your physical health is in good order.

Regular health checks are an important aspect of maintaining good overall health. During your first health check, we will be able to establish a baseline so that we can compare later assessments and determine the level of progress or deterioration that you have made. Over time, we will be able to get an idea of how your health is progressing and whether there are any potentially problematic areas that we need to keep a close eye on. Regular health checks are a crucial aspect to staying in long-term good health and avoiding the development of major health concerns in the future.

Travel advice

Thinking of taking a holiday? Drop into Fairfield Medical Centre for a consultation about your upcoming holiday and the medical concerns that you need to be aware about. We have provided medical travel advice to countless travellers, from recommending and administering immunisations to providing advice surrounding the health challenges of particular destinations.

Even if you are a seasoned traveller, there is a significant amount of value to be gained by speaking with a medical professional before catching that flight or stepping on the ship. We have done quite a bit of travelling ourselves, so we’ll be able to put your challenges, such as taking regular medication, in context.

Speak to us about your upcoming holiday and we’ll help you make the right decisions about your health – it can save a lot of trouble down the track!

Family planning, lactation, parenting and antenatal advice

Starting a family can be hugely challenging. That challenge doesn’t really go away when it’s the second or third (or fourth or more!) child, but you begin to get an idea of what to expect. Nevertheless, no matter how many children you have (or are planning to have) we are here to help.

At Fairfield Medical Centre, we provide family planning services for those who are looking to arrange the beginning of their family or delay it for some time. We can also assist with lactation difficulties and the many challenges that new parents face.

If you are currently pregnant and are looking for antenatal advice, we can help you gain an understanding of the changes your body is going through and what to expect when the baby comes. We find that having more knowledge about the entire process of pregnancy can help people put their experiences into context and face upcoming challenges more readily. If you are planning on becoming pregnant and would like to organise a general practitioner for antenatal care during the pregnancy, we can help you there as well. Using the same doctor throughout your entire family journey can be of great assistance, particularly as they will become intimately familiar with your family and unique circumstances.

Pregnancy tests

Many people use the at-home urine tests to check for pregnancy. However, it is highly recommended that you visit a doctor to confirm your result. At Fairfield Medical Centre, we have happily confirmed many pregnancies in the past.

ECG – Heart check

An ECG (Electrocardiogram) is a common medical test that is used to detect anomalies in heart activity. It measures the electricity generated when the heart contracts, the regular beat of which usually produces a standard shape. A different shape may indicate to us that you have a heart problem.

ECGs are commonly administered to eliminate other potential health concerns. They are often recommended for people who present risk factors for heart disease, heart attack or stroke. If you believe you need an ECG, or would like to speak with a doctor about one, please book a consultation at Fairfield Medical Centre and we will speak about your medical history and test requirements.

Spirometry

Spirometry is a common medical test used to determine the health or effectiveness of your lungs. If you need to perform a spirometry test, you’ll be asked to sit and breathe into a tube or mouthpiece that is attached to a machine. You will be assessed on the volume of air you inhale and exhale as well as how quickly you can exhale.

Spirometry tests are very common for workplace health assessments and also for a range of other common illnesses. Your doctor may recommend a spirometry test if you have (or are suspected of having) one of the following illnesses:

  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Asthma
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis

Audiometry

Ear health and audiometry testing may be conducted for a number of reasons. Most commonly, it is to assess a child’s hearing development or hearing efficacy early in their life. Additionally, many workplace health assessments may require a hearing test prior to employees starting work. Many workplaces with elevated sound levels, particularly those where hearing protection is required, will likely require their employees to conduct an audiometry exam prior to starting work and at regular intervals. There may also be some legislative requirements, depending on your location and industry. If you are an employer, speak with Fairfield Medical Centre about audiometry tests for your business.

Counselling

At Fairfield Medical Centre we are able to offer a range of counselling services depending on your requirements and whether we have the internal capacity to service them. For many of our patients, some degree of counselling is required, and when our general practitioners are unable to assist, we have a network of allied health professionals that can provide counselling services.

We have assisted with counselling services for a range of mental health concerns in the past. Some of these include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress management
  • Grief and loss
  • PTSD
  • Phobias and complexes
  • Work difficulties
  • Relationship difficulties

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are a part of the lives of most people. From childhood immunisations through to a range of other vaccinations throughout adult life (such as the annual flu shot), there are going to be at least a few times in your life that you get the needle. If you need to book in vaccinations for yourself, your child, or a dependent, drop by Fairfield Medical Centre for a consultation and we will make the necessary arrangements.

We provide flu vaccinations every year. The flu shot is important for people of all ages, but particularly so for children, the elderly and anyone who may suffer from a compromised immune system. If you’d like to avoid those several days of sickness (or worse) that comes with catching influenza, come into Fairfield Medical Centre and arrange a flu shot before flu season really starts.

Pre-employment medicals

Prior to starting work, your employer may require you to undertake a pre-employment medical. Pre-employment medicals can cover a range of bases depending on the requirements of different employers. At Fairfield Medical Centre, we can work with employers to develop pre-employment medical examinations and plans for follow-up checks that suit each employer’s specific requirements.

Pre-employment medicals may be conducted to determine whether you are medically eligible for a job, or they could be used to establish a baseline of health to which later medicals can be compared. Common components of a pre-employment medical may include:

  • Urine or blood tests
  • Blood pressure test
  • Height and weight measurements
  • Vision test
  • General review of medical history
  • A basic physical, which may include:
    • ear, nose and throat check
    • respiratory system check
    • cardiovascular health check
    • skin check
    • nervous system check
    • preliminary musculoskeletal assessment

If you are an employer, speak to us about becoming a preferred provider of pre-employment medical services for your organisation. We can work with you to develop pre-employment medical procedures that will address all the requirements of your business and help you assess your employees adequately.

Nutritional and weight loss advice

Many of our clients at Fairfield Medical Advice ask us for assistance with nutritional advice and help losing weight. By using medically proven methods and tailoring plans to the needs of every patient, we have been able to help many people lose weight and regain some health. For many of our patients, weight loss is medically necessary in order to avoid future, potentially harmful health complications.

Living life at a healthy weight can help you avoid many of the health concerns that come with being overweight, such as diabetes, additional strain on ligaments and joints, cardiovascular and respiratory health issues, or heart disease.

Chronic Disease Management

There are many steps that can be taken to ensure that life is manageable even with a serious illness. We have assisted many patients in the past find methods to address their chronic disease and manage it throughout daily life, regaining freedom and independence.

If you have a chronic disease (which can range from asthma to stroke or serious musculoskeletal conditions), please book a consultation with Fairfield Medical Centre.

We can also help you develop a roadmap to recovery in the case of serious sporting injuries. We have worked with many athletes to recover from major sporting injuries, build back strength and return to full capacity within their respective sporting disciplines.
