If you are looking for a contraceptive that does not rely on a daily oral pill –  and the added task of remembering to take it – then you may consider an Implanon method or a Mirena.  Both are two different hormone releasing contraceptives, placed in different areas of your body; Implanon is a contraceptive implant and Mirena is hormone releasing contraceptive device.

  • Implanon is a small plastic rod placed under the skin of the upper arm. It contains a progestogen hormone that slowly releases the hormone into the blood stream and can last for three years.
  • Mirena is a t-shaped device that releases the hormone levongestrel locally into your uterus. It can last for up to five years.

Considering Mirena or Implanon?

Both are highly effective with a 99% success rate. No contraception is 100% effective.

Does it hurt to have an Implanon or Mirena placement?

Our SmartClinics Doctors will ensure that the procedure is as painless and stress-free as possible and will put you at ease during the procedure.

For Implanon, the area in the upper arm needs to be given a local anesthetic injection. We know that women tend to feel a little pinch or sting when getting the numbing shot. After that, you shouldn’t feel the procedure. Your arm may ache a little, but this pain goes away almost immediately.

A Mirena placement takes just a few minutes and is nonsurgical. There can be insertion pain and bleeding, but if this happens, it is expected to subside within 30 minutes.

We work to keep every process as comfortable as possible and support you through the after-care process.

Can I remove an Implanon or a Mirena?

Yes, both Implanon and Mirena are completely reversible! If you decided to get pregnant or no longer want to use them as a contraceptive, our GP’s will help with the removal process. You should not attempt to remove either on your own.

Is the Implanon or Mirena more effective?

Both contraceptives work in a similar way. The only difference is the placement and the number of years they last for.

The best way to decide the right contraceptive for you, is to talk to one of our friendly GP’s that are skilled in women’s health.
