Acne treatment

A number of SmartClinics General Practitioners have undergone additional medical training into skin conditions, and offer a range of acne treatments for our patients. While acne primarily affects teenagers and young adults, it can happen to anyone, at any age. Acne can be painful and can affect the patient’s confidence. In extreme cases acne can leave permanent scarring (which may be difficult to reverse), hence we recommend treating acne as soon as it appears to be problematic.

Initial Consultation – Acne assessment

The first step to treating acne is an acne assessment by your GP. This involves looking at the severity of the acne or acne scarring, the locations on the body and face, and possible causes of the outbreak. Your Doctor will then recommend one or more of the following treatments:

Medical strength acne skin care

Many medical-strength skin care products are available over the counter, and your SmartClinics GP will recommend the best product for you.

Acne light therapy

**Currently only available only SmartClinics Burleigh Heads (Gold Coast) Ph: (07) 5535 5170 **

How does light therapy work?

Light therapy uses acne light devices to target the bacteria clogged in the skin’s pores by acne. Metabolic by-products left by the bacteria are sensitive to light, and the device’s blue light produces oxygen that kills off bacteria once it makes contact with the skin.

What can light therapy do?

Not only does light therapy kill off bacteria in the skin, the treatment normalises skin cell activity, reducing the appearance of acne. The build-up of collagen caused by light therapy assists in reducing the intensity of acne and acne scarring.

How long does light therapy last?

Light therapy is effective up to four months after treatment, depending on the type and intensity of acne. It’s important to continue taking care of your skin even after receiving light therapy. Patients generally require X to X number of light therapy treatments over X months before they see results.

Medical microdermabrasion

**Currently only available only SmartClinics Burleigh Heads (Gold Coast) Ph: (07) 5535 5170 **

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion helps repair skin cells, freshening and revitalising the skin on your face. Treatment is especially effective for:

  • acne
  • premature ageing
  • sun exposure
  • dehydrated skin

While most commonly used on the face, microdermabrasion is also effective for the hands, back, chest, and neck.

How does microdermabrasion work?

Exfoliating crystals are sprayed on the face, unclogging the pores by removing dead skin cells and dry skin. Once dead skin cells have been removed, a hydrating solution is applied to the skin, draining toxins and leaving you refreshed. Treatment finishes with moisturisers or other recommended skin products, to help balance the skin and protect it from future residue.

Microdermabrasion takes between 10 and 20 minutes per session. Treatments are gentle, similar to having a facial.

The effects of microdermabrasion can last up to a month, but may vary from person to person. Fortnightly or monthly sessions are recommended for the most effective results.

Acne scar treatments

**Available at SmartClinics Annerley (Brisbane) Ph: (07) 3848 9299 and Burleigh Heads (Gold Coast) Ph: (07) 5535 5170 **

Scar treatment helps even out the skin tone, and results in a visible reduction of acne scarring. A variety of treatments are available for acne scarring today, such as Microneedling and Fractional Radiofrequency (Pixel RF).

Microneedling

Microneedling, or dermal rolling, applies a roller of tiny surgical needles to the skin’s surface. This creates small puncture channels, encouraging collagen renewal and skin regeneration. Microneedling encourages skin to reinforce and repair itself, and is well suited to people unable to undergo laser therapy treatments for acne scarring.

On average, microneedling sessions take one hour, and may be followed with light therapy for maximum results. We generally recommend X number of treatments in order to see results.

Fractional Radiofrequency (Pixel RF)

Fractional Radiofrequency uses a microneedle to release oil build up in the skin, and is less painful than lasers. As the skin is stimulated by the microneedle, acne scars are removed, leaving healthier and firmer skin. Fractional Radiofrequency can also be used to tighten the skin, smoothing out ageing or sagging skin.

Laser therapy

**Currently only available only SmartClinics Burleigh Heads (Gold Coast) Ph: (07) 5535 5170 **

Laser therapy reduces acne scarring by removing damaged skin tissue, one layer at a time. It smooths out the skin and encourages collagen production, as well as lowering oil production in the skin. Laser therapy targets skin cells that don’t properly shed, blocking pores and attracting bacteria to the skin.

By removing the skin cells blocking your pores, laser therapy treats acne scarring and lowers the chances of future acne outbreaks. Pigmented or superficial scarring is also removed.
