Flu season is here, and protecting your child against influenza is one of the best ways to help keep them healthy this winter.
Flu vaccinations are available at SmartClinics for children aged 6 months and over. Booking early is recommended to help ensure your child is protected before flu cases peak in the community.
Why is Flu Vaccination Important for Children?
Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause serious complications in children, including pneumonia, dehydration and hospitalisation.
An annual flu vaccine helps protect your child from influenza and can reduce the spread of the virus to family members and the wider community.
Who Can Get a Children’s Flu Vaccine?
Flu vaccination is recommended for all children aged 6 months and over.
Children aged 6 months to under 9 years receiving a flu vaccine for the first time may require two doses, given at least four weeks apart. This helps provide the best protection against influenza.
After their first year of vaccination, only one annual flu vaccine is usually required.
What is FluMist®?
FluMist® is a needle-free nasal spray flu vaccine that is administered into the nose rather than by injection.
For many children, FluMist® can be a more comfortable alternative to a traditional flu vaccine, particularly for those who are anxious about needles.
Who is Eligible for FluMist® in Queensland?
Eligible Queensland children and adolescents aged 2–17 years may be able to receive FluMist®.
FluMist® is available free of charge for:
- Children aged 2–5 years
- Children and adolescents aged 6–17 years who struggle with needles
Not everyone is suitable for FluMist®. The GP or nurse can assess whether it is the right option for your child based on their age and medical history.
Free Flu Vaccinations for Queensland Residents
The Queensland Government is providing free flu vaccinations for all Queensland residents aged 6 months and over in 2026.
Free flu vaccination is an important way to help protect individuals, families and the wider community during flu season.
