Iron Infusions

Iron Infusions

Low iron levels and iron deficiency are common health issues that can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and shortness of breath. In some cases, iron supplements taken orally may not be effective or suitable. That’s where iron infusions can help.

What is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion is a procedure where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a vein (intravenously). This allows your body to absorb and use the iron more efficiently than oral supplements. Iron infusions are typically used when:

  • Oral iron is not well tolerated
  • Iron levels need to be corrected quickly
  • There is ongoing blood loss or malabsorption
  • You have certain medical conditions such as chronic kidney disease or inflammatory bowel disease

Who Can Benefit?

Iron infusions may be recommended for:

  • People diagnosed with iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia
  • Pregnant women with low iron levels (depending on stage and severity)
  • Patients preparing for or recovering from surgery
  • Individuals with medical conditions that affect iron absorption

What to Expect

The doctor will provide your iron infusions in a safe and comfortable clinical setting. The process involves:

  1. Initial Consultation: Your doctor will assess your symptoms, medical history, and blood test results to determine if an iron infusion is appropriate for you.
  2. Preparation: If suitable, you may need further blood tests to confirm your iron levels and rule out other causes.
  3. The Infusion: On the day of the procedure, iron will be administered via a drip over approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Some patients may need more than one infusion depending on their iron levels.
  4. Aftercare: You’ll be monitored for a short period after the infusion to ensure there are no adverse reactions. Most people can return to normal activities the same day.

Is it Safe?

Iron infusions are generally well tolerated. Mild side effects can include headache, nausea, or temporary changes in taste. Serious allergic reactions are rare but will be closely monitored for during the infusion. Your doctor will explain the risks and benefits in detail during your consultation.

Booking Your Appointment

If you’ve been advised to have an iron infusion or are experiencing symptoms such as persistent tiredness, low energy, or breathlessness, we recommend booking an appointment with one of the SmartClinic doctors that offer this service. They will assess your needs and guide you through the process to ensure the best outcome for your health.
