Heart Health Check
A Heart Health Check is a simple 20-minute appointment with the doctor to assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 5 years and create a plan to keep your heart healthy.
What happens during a Heart Health Check?
During the appointment, the doctor will:
- Review your medical history, lifestyle, and family history
- Check your blood pressure
- Review or arrange blood tests for cholesterol and blood sugar
- Calculate your overall heart disease risk
- Develop a personalised plan to reduce your risk
Who should book a Heart Health Check?
You may be eligible if you are:
- Aged 45–79 years
- Aged 35 years or older with diabetes
- An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person aged 30 years or older
Why is it important?
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia, and many risk factors have no symptoms. A Heart Health Check helps identify your risk early, so you and the doctor can take steps to prevent future health problems.
Understanding your results
Your results will show whether your risk is low, intermediate, or high. The doctor will explain what this means and guide you on the next steps, which may include lifestyle changes, ongoing monitoring, or medication if needed.
Cost and eligibility
Heart Health Checks are covered by Medicare for eligible patients. Ask the practice about fees when booking.
